Result Reporting

Outpatient Results
Our process of result reporting has been implemented with regard to patient privacy.  We ask physicians ordering laboratory testing to provide a dedicated and working ‘fax’ (facsimile machine) number - a phone number that does not have a recording or person who may answer when dialed electronically by our fax server.  This number should be indicated on the physician order form that the patient brings with them to WakeMed. The facsimile machine where the test results will print should be located in a private area and not in view of non-qualified recipients.

We make every effort to fax results when requested. In cases where you may not have received your fax, please contact us by calling Pathology Information at 919-350-8242.
Laboratory staff is not allowed to give results to patients. Outpatients may obtain their results from the ordering physician. Results from inpatient stays may be obtained from the Medical Records department at WakeMed.

Clinical Laboratory Results
Clinical laboratory results are available for ordering physicians by calling WakeMed Pathology Information at (919) 350-8242.  Results are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for tests performed at any WakeMed location.  All critical results will be called to the physician immediately upon completion of the test.

Anatomic Pathology Results
Results for Anatomic Pathology specimens are sent to the ordering physician. Anatomic Pathology may be contacted between 8 am and 5 pm Monday through Friday at 919-350-8260.

HIPAA Policy
WakeMed acts in accordance with the Health and Human Services HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations in regard to patient health information privacy.

Ordering physicians are reminded that they are responsible for maintaining signed HIPAA disclosure forms for patients whose results are requested to be released to parties who are not the ordering physician.
