Meet Our Bariatric Care Team

In addition to expertise and experience, our bariatric care team provides the individual attention and support that you need to succeed on your way to a healthier, more vibrant lifestyle. Your bariatric care team includes a coordinator, nurses, nutritionists, and health and fitness specialists who will treat you with patience, compassion and discretion. They will work closely with you to answer questions, gather information, and provide encouragement and support before and after bariatric surgery in a program that is personalized for your specific needs.


June Adamio, R.N., B.S.N., CBN
Bariatric Program Coordinator

June has been employed with WakeMed for more than a decade, serving as a nurse on the Medical-Surgical unit and the post anesthesia unit. She transitioned to be the bariatric program coordinator in January 2014.

In this role, June works with patients across the perioperative continuum, meeting them before surgery and following during their hospitalization. June is also responsible for maintenance of our facility accreditation for Bariatric surgery. June is particularly good at her job as program coordinator because she has experienced bariatric surgery herself in 2008.

Education and Training
June holds a bachelor of science in nursing and a certification in Bariatric Nursing (CBN). She is a member of the National American Bariatric Nurses organization and a member of the American Metabolic Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement program (MBSAQIP).


Parul Kharod MS, RD, LDN
Parul Kharod is a Registered Dietitian and licensed nutritionist, and currently works with both outpatients and inpatients at WakeMed Cary Hospital. 

Education and Training
Parul earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Foods and Nutrition, and her Master of Science degree in Dietetics from India.  She completed her dietetic internship through Meredith College, Raleigh.

She is affiliated with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She is a member of the Weight Management Dietetic Practice Group.

Diet and Nutrition Counseling
Parul counsels patients on weight management, diabetes, heart-related issues such as hypertension and hyperlipidemia, and food allergies.  Being an avid cook, she is able to help patients with menu planning and make appropriate changes to their diets while still conforming to their preferences.


Trish Vulpis, RD
Trish Vulpis has been a Registered Dietitian for 21 years and currently counsels bariatric patients full time. She has experience counseling and consulting for Whole Foods, hospitals, sports facilities and individuals as well as teaching weight loss classes. She presented a lecture for the American Cancer Society on nutrition and cancer treatments as well as a lecture for the American Heart Association on nutrition.

Education and Training
Trish earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics from Auburn University. In addition, she has a Certification in Adult Weight Management and a Certification in Pediatric Weight Management.

Diet and Nutrition Counseling
Outside of surgical procedures, Trish and our other dietitians are trained and ready to assist you in planning and carrying out the nutritional changes needed for a healthy lifestyle.


Melissa Bell, CHFS
Melissa Bell is a health and fitness specialist for the Bariatric program as well as with outpatient rehab and cardiac rehab.

Education and Training
She is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a Health and Fitness Specialist. She currently is working to complete certification as an Exercise Specialist. She received her Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine from Appalachian State University. In addition, she has in-depth experience working one-on-one with overweight and obese teenagers.


Amy Bowen, RD, LDN, CNSC
Dietitian 3West

Amy Bowen is a registered and licensed dietitian who joined the WakeMed Cary Hospital bariatrics team in 2012. During a patient’s hospital stay, Amy works with patients and their families to address nutritional issues including adequacy of the diet, meeting basic nutritional needs, food intolerances/allergies, challenges in implementing healthful eating habits, and adherence to vitamin and mineral supplementation. She is also available to answer patient’s unique dietary questions and concerns.

In addition to her role at WakeMed Cary Hospital, Amy serves as the Dietetic Internship Coordinator for Meredith College. Prior to moving to North Carolina, Amy Bowen started her career at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where she was responsible for providing medical nutrition therapy to a variety of patient populations including surgical oncology, diabetes and heart disease. Amy grew up in the quaint but charming town of State College, Pennsylvania. She graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a BS in Nutritional Sciences and completed her dietetic internship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. In her spare time, Amy enjoys traveling, experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, spending time with family and friends, and running with her dog, Lola.
