For weight loss surgery, WakeMed Cary Hospital's experienced bariatric surgery team is assembled with surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, technicians and support staff who have expertise in and use the most advanced surgical techniques to provide our patients' with positive outcomes.

Meet Our Bariatric Care Team

In addition to expertise and experience, our bariatric care team provides the individual attention and support that you need to succeed on your way to a healthier, more vibrant lifestyle. Your bariatric care team includes a coordinator, nurses, nutritionists, and health and fitness specialists who will treat you with patience, compassion and discretion. They will work closely with you to answer questions, gather information, and provide encouragement and support before and after bariatric surgery in a program that is personalized for your specific needs.

 

Parul Kharod MS, RD, LDN
Parul Kharod is a Registered Dietitian and licensed nutritionist, and currently works with both outpatients and inpatients at WakeMed Cary Hospital. 

Education and Training
Parul earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Foods and Nutrition, and her Master of Science degree in Dietetics from India.  She completed her dietetic internship through Meredith College, Raleigh.

She is affiliated with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. She is a member of the Weight Management Dietetic Practice Group.

Diet and Nutrition Counseling
Parul counsels patients on weight management, diabetes, heart-related issues such as hypertension and hyperlipidemia, and food allergies.  Being an avid cook, she is able to help patients with menu planning and make appropriate changes to their diets while still conforming to their preferences.

 

Kristen Klecha, MS, RD, LDN
Kristen Klecha is a registered and licensed dietitian and nutritionist and joined WakeMed Cary Hospital in 2003. She works with both inpatients and outpatients. She developed the Bariatric Support Group at Cary Hospital in January 2010 and became a Certified Bariatric Support Group Leader in April 2010. 

Education and Training
She received her Master of Science in Nutrition from Meredith College and completed her dietetic internship at the school as well. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Nutrition, Food, and Exercise from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, VA. In addition, she has received a Certificate of Training in Adult Weight Management. She is affiliated with the American Dietetic Association and is a member of its Weight Management Dietetic Practice Group.

Diet and Nutrition Counseling
As an important element of the all-inclusive bariatric program, Kristen functions as a critical component of the bariatric team. She ensures every patient has a comprehensive dietary weight-loss plan that is detailed and realistic.

 

Trish Vulpis, RD
Trish Vulpis has been a Registered Dietitian for 21 years and currently counsels bariatric patients full time. She has experience counseling and consulting for Whole Foods, hospitals, sports facilities and individuals as well as teaching weight loss classes. She presented a lecture for the American Cancer Society on nutrition and cancer treatments as well as a lecture for the American Heart Association on nutrition.

Education and Training
Trish earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics from Auburn University. In addition, she has a Certification in Adult Weight Management and a Certification in Pediatric Weight Management.

Outside of surgical procedures, Trish and our other dietitians are trained and ready to assist you in planning and carrying out the nutritional changes needed for a healthy lifestyle.

 

Melissa Bell, CHFS
Melissa Bell is a health and fitness specialist for the Bariatric program as well as with outpatient rehab and cardiac rehab.

Education and Training
She is certified by the American College of Sports Medicine as a Health and Fitness Specialist. She currently is working to complete certification as an Exercise Specialist. She received her Bachelor of Science in Sports Medicine from Appalachian State University. In addition, she has in-depth experience working one-on-one with overweight and obese teenagers.

 

Marie Bagin, CES
Marie Bagin works as a Clinical Exercise Specialist at WakeMed Healthworks - Fitness & Wellness Center.  Marie designed and implemented the fitness discipline of the Bariatric Program and conducts pre- & post-op fitness consultations. She has experience working with cardiac rehabilitation programs in the Raleigh and Boston areas. In addition to her clinical experience, she has worked with clients that have various special medical considerations, including post bariatric surgery, cardiac and pulmonary disease, and youth and athletes, and has managed a fitness staff of 25 personal trainers and their clients. 

Education and Training
Marie has a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Ithaca College with concentrations in Cardiac Rehabilitation and Nutrition. She holds the American College of Sports Medicine's (ACSM) Clinical Exercise Specialist certification, the ACSM Health Fitness Specialist certification, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association's Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist certification. 
She was an All-State Field Hockey Player at Ithaca College and has coached several high school junior varsity teams in New York, Massachusetts and North Carolina.
