RALEIGH, N.C. (May 31, 2011) – Capitol Broadcasting Company, through its CBC/WRAL Community Fund, is pleased to announce a $100,000 contribution to the initiative which will expand and enhance children’s healthcare services at WakeMed Health & Hospitals (WakeMed).

The WakeMed Foundation’s $20 million Just for Kids Kampaign, the largest fundraising campaign in WakeMed’s history, seeks to accomplish many important healthcare goals for children and families in Wake County and our region. The initial goal, to raise the first $8.5 million and open Wake County’s first-ever Children’s Hospital, was reached last summer. This ‘hospital within a hospital’, located on the 4th floor of a new patient tower at WakeMed’s Raleigh Campus, expanded patient capacity, relieved consistent overcrowding due to area population growth and created a state-of-the-art pediatric facility. The next phase of the campaign will include a much needed expansion of WakeMed’s Level IV (highest level) Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for which WakeMed already has received state approval.

Due to community generosity including from diverse corporations and organizations throughout the Triangle-area, the campaign recently achieved the $10 million milestone.

“The expansion of children’s healthcare services at WakeMed is an asset to our community and most importantly for our children. Families in Wake County and beyond will benefit from this impressive new facility,” said James F. Goodmon, president and CEO of Capitol Broadcasting Company, Inc.

“As a result of the commitment and dedication of good corporate citizens and leaders like Capitol Broadcasting Company and Jim Goodmon, the Children’s Hospital and NICU expansion are the first projects in WakeMed’s history to be fully funded by community donations,” commented Dr. Bill Atkinson, WakeMed, president and CEO. “Capitol Broadcasting’s generous donation is truly an investment in our community’s children and families.”
