Carolina Cardiovascular Surgical Associates Joins Wake Specialty Physicians

RALEIGH, N.C. (November 21, 2011) – WakeMed Health & Hospitals today announces that Carolina Cardiovascular Surgical Associates (CCSA) joined the Wake Specialty Physicians (WSP) network this month. Wake Specialty Physicians – Carolina Cardiovascular Surgical Associates includes Drs. R. Merrill Hunter, William A. Killinger, David L. Robaczewski, and W. Charles Helton, who joined the WSP network on November 14.

Dr. Helton, a practice founder, and his colleagues helped shape and foster the growth of WakeMed’s cardiac surgery program into the success that it is today. Combined with WakeMed Heart Center’s complement of cardiology services, WakeMed continues to be the busiest heart program in North Carolina, treating more patients than any other hospital in the state. Using the latest technology and advanced techniques, WakeMed’s staff of cardiologists, surgeons, cardiovascular specialists, midlevel providers, nurses and other professionals perform more than 25,700 procedures per year.

“The first open heart surgery in Wake County was performed at WakeMed more than 40 years ago, and the system continues to be the leader in volume, expertise and technology for cardiovascular care,” commented Dr. Hunter, director of the practice. “We believe that our patients get the best care at WakeMed, and we are very proud to be affiliated with such an extraordinary leader in cardiac care.”

Carolina Cardiovascular Surgical Associates was founded in 1979 and has been a leader in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery for over 30 years. The practice’s surgeons perform a wide spectrum of cardiac and vascular surgery procedures, including heart valve repair and replacement, aortic aneurysm repair, carotid artery repair and the correction of arrhythmias, among others.

Wake Specialty Physicians – Carolina Cardiovascular Surgical Associates’ office will remain in the WakeMed Heart Center, and all existing phone numbers, contact information and scheduling procedures will remain unchanged for patients and referring physicians.

“We are so pleased to welcome Carolina Cardiovascular Surgical Associates’ outstanding surgeons and staff to our growing physician practices network,” explains Dr. Susan Weaver, executive vice president, WakeMed Medical Affairs. “After years of working closely with CCSA, we believe this new partnership will allow us to provide a higher level of care to our cardiac patients through the fully-integrated delivery of cardiovascular surgery and support services offered through the WakeMed Heart Center.”
