Children & Adolescent Services
At WakeMed, Pediatric Rehabilitation is a form of rehab that focuses specifically on the needs of children.
Because children have unique physical, mental and emotional needs, those who require rehabilitation are often referred to our pediatric rehabilitation facilities rather than being treated by specialists who normally work with adults.
Some examples of pediatric rehabilitation include speech therapy for children with speech or language defects, occupational therapy to help children learn to perform tasks like writing, training in the use of prosthetics, and developmental evaluations to determine why children are developing slowly and what can be done to help them.
In addition to addressing congenital conditions, pediatric rehabilitation can also be used to address acquired injuries, ranging from amputations which force a child to change his or her lifestyle, to injuries like burns which require extensive rehabilitation during recovery.
The earlier rehabilitation is provided, the better the outlook for the patient can be. This can make pediatric rehabilitation a vital part of treatment for children who have experienced accidents or physical abuse resulting in serious injuries.
Pediatric patients at WakeMed are supervised by physicians who have completed a residency in rehabilitation and physical therapy, and patients' therapy involves a team of care providers including audiologists, speech pathologists, physical therapists, and psychologists, among others.

At WakeMed, the departments of Clinical Case Management, Neuropsychology, and/or Chaplain Services help patients and/or their families with specific coping and adjustment issues.
They also provide education and information related to disability and/or activity limitations during individual, group and/or family therapy. These services will also be provided as appropriate to siblings and peers.
WakeMed Rehab is committed to encouraging family involvement in the treatment, assessment, and continued care planning for all children and adolescent patients.
The developmental and social needs of these young people are addressed in individual, family and group treatment activities, and we place a special emphasis on leisure/diversionary activities and peer interaction whenever possible.
Our pediatric services are located at the following outpatient locations: Raleigh Campus, Rehab Hospital, Wake Forest Road Outpatient Rehab Center, and Clayton Medical Park.
