Healthy Balance

Join WakeMed and the YMCA of the Triangle as we kick off Healthy Balance. It's not a diet program or structured exercise plan, but a simple approach to life that gives you and your family fun and innovative ideas for creating a healthier way of living.  We offer easy and realistic tips you can incorporate into your daily life.

In the United States, nearly one-third of all adults are considered obese, having a body mass index (BMI) of more than 30.  And it's not just adults.  Nearly 18 percent of all teens and nearly 14 percent of children under age five are overweight.  With an increase in weight comes an increased risk of many diseases and health concerns, such as:

  • Hypertension
  • High cholesterol, including high triglycerides
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Heart disease and stroke
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Arthritis
  • Sleep apnea, respiratory problems
  • Cancers, including endometrial, breast and colon

The good news is that keeping your weight under control isn't that difficult.  With a small investment of your time, some creative grocery shopping and adding "play" time, you can keep a healthy weight.  The fact is that the only way to keep your weight in check is to eat a variety of foods in moderation. Starving yourself or latching on to the latest diet craze isn't what works.  A steady, healthy, balanced diet will last you for a lifetime.  And depravation is never part of the Healthy Balance way!

Healthy Balance isn't about drastic changes. It's all about eating foods and recipes that the whole family will enjoy - even your picky four-year-old! It's about changing the way you think about exercise.  Don't exercise, but let loose and play!  Add activities that will help keep your heart healthy while putting a smile on your face. It's also about relaxing and "taking time to smell the roses."
