Graduate Medical Education
WakeMed is home to Wake Area Health Education Center (AHEC), which brings valuable benefits to health professionals and community residents in Wake and eight surrounding counties.
During an average year, Wake AHEC sponsors more than 800 programs that provides career enrichment to over 25,000 participants. This includes several English Spanish Language Interpreter courses.
WakeMed: Producing Future Doctors For North Carolina
Wake AHEC is the largest off-site teaching program for the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Nearly every UNC medical student and one-fourth of all residents complete a rotation at WakeMed. On average, WakeMed welcomes 48 residents per year as a part of the program.
Third- and fourth-year medical students complete around 625 months of education in our facility per year. Each of the 60 physicians with Wake AHEC either holds a teaching position or is tenure-track faculty at UNC.
WakeMed is a Major Teaching Institution providing residencies and teaching programs approved by the AMA's Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Surgical Physician Assistant Residency Program
A postgraduate residency is a wonderful way to attain additional training and skills. At WakeMed Health & Hospitals, we pride ourselves on providing high-quality, evidence-based practices for our patients. Participants in the Postgraduate Residency Program receive the intense clinical and didactic training necessary to gain proficiency and marketability in the areas of trauma, critical care, general and orthopaedic surgery.
