"My 14-year-old son had an accident and was admitted to WakeMed with a level 4 injury to his spleen.  From the Children's Emergency Department (ED) to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) to the pediatric floor, my son was taken care of with the utmost compassion and attention.  The nurse in the Children's ED comforted me with her calm voice and attention to my needs because I was tremendously worried about my son.

In the PICU, Nurse Mandy was an angel on Earth.  Once my son was transferred to a room, he nicknamed Nurse Rita his Sunshine Nurse.  Her sense of humor and happiness lifted his spirits and kept him smiling.

The food delivery staff member was pleasant and kind with each meal.  Once he found out that my son really liked the macaroni and cheese, guess what?  My son would always have mac and cheese on his tray.  Lastly, his discharge nurse answered all of my questions.  I was impressed with her knowledge, and I will never forget her smile and calm manner with my son.

It was a mother's nightmare to get a call that your child has been in an accident, but WakeMed was a blessing in that various personnel worked as a team to meet the medical needs of my son during a critical time.  When my son was discharged and left the hall, the nurses and staff gathered at the nurses' desk, said good-bye and told him they would miss his humor.  Plus, one nurse told him to stop by and visit the next week when he went back to WakeMed for his follow-up appointment.

Where else can you find such personal attention and compassion?  No where except WakeMed."

-Denise from Angier, NC

"The staff was very nice and very caring.  They allowed my daughter to stay in my room during my entire stay.  The facilities were very clean and the bed linens were changed frequently.  It almost feels like home."

-Dansy from Cary, NC

"On March 4 of this year, my 5-year-old grandson was taken to WakeMed. I had never had any experience with WakeMed, but now I can truthfully say it is a wonderful place.  My grandson went into cardiac arrest, 911 was called, and he was transported to WakeMed. He stayed in ICU for two weeks.  He came home March 23.  He received excellent care.  God's healing hand and the knowledgeable staff at WakeMed is why he is home today and doing well."

-Faye from Garner, NC

"On Sept. 17, 2008, I went to the WakeMed Cary Hospital Emergency Department I was suffering from dizziness and numbness in my left arm and leg.  I didn't realize I was having a stroke, since I didn't have the symptoms that I think of when I hear the word "stroke", such as slurred speech, blurred vision, mouth drooping, etc.  The team involved in my care from arrival to discharge was exceptionally competent, caring, understanding and focused. If it had not been for quick intervention beginning in triage, I would not be where I am today.  Being six months out, I am able to work full-time and have very little residual effects from the stroke.  THANK YOU ALL!"

-David from Fuquay-Varina, NC

"I was moving a refrigerator from my home when I developed chest pains.  We called EMS.  When they arrived, they asked where we wanted to go.  I asked who was the best for heart care.  They said WakeMed.  It turned out I had an aortic dissection, which nearly took my life.  Well, all the nurses and doctors who treated me were extremely nice.  They called me the miracle man.  I guess it's because I was not expected to live.  I was in the hospital for nearly a month.  To summarize, they saved my life.  I couldn't be more impressed with the WakeMed staff."

-Tim from Clayton, NC

"I chose WakeMed in 1990.  I had triple bypass surgery.  My surgeon was Dr. Landvater.  The care at WakeMed was great then, so I'm sure it's even better now.  I have never even had to use a nitro pill.  I would recommend WakeMed to anyone who is having or has had heart problems.  THEY ARE GREEEEEAT!  Thanks, WakeMed."

-Amos from Stedman, NC

"Last March, I was at work in my office when I suddenly became short of breath and had severe chest pain.  I was taken by EMS to a local hospital where I was kept overnight and had a stress test the next day.  The doctor wanted me to go to WakeMed to have a catheterization because of my family history.  I agreed, but I was hesitant because I was only 50 years old.  The cath was scheduled for the following week, and I even tried to call and cancel it, but the office was closed, so I said, "Lord, you're trying to tell me something."

We knew I had a 50 percent blockage in the main artery to my heart, but I kept saying it's OK.  When I left that Friday morning, I told my kids that I loved them and that I would see them that night.  Dr. Greg Rose was scheduled to do my cath.  When he came in my room, I was so impressed.  He explained in detail everything he was going to do.

The original 50 percent blockage was still the same, but he discovered I had an 80 percent blockage in the right coronary artery.  He placed a stent there right away.

Dr. Rose is the greatest.  He treated me as if I was the only patient he had.  I can't say enough about my care while I was at WakeMed.  Everyone, including the doctors, nurses and CNAs, was very good to me, and I only had to ask once for something I needed.  Thank you, Dr. Rose and all the staff at WakeMed.  You are the love and heart of my soul."

-Mary from Dudley, NC

"I recently had a heart attack at the age of 35.  Wow!  35!  And I was scared!  But once I arrived at WakeMed, I knew that I was in good hands.  They made me feel very comfortable and very positive.  My doctors and nurses made me feel like a new person and gave me another chance at life.  Thanks, WakeMed!  You will always have a place in my heart."

-Chris from Clayton, NC

"Last summer, my husband was working in Raleigh when he developed chest pain.  His original plan was to make the eight-hour trip home and seek treatment.  On his way to the highway, he took a detour and ended up at the WakeMed Raleigh Campus.  I received a call about 10 minutes later with instructions to come to WakeMed as soon as possible.

Within minutes of his arrival in the ED, they called a Code STEMI and had a cardiac team on the way to his bedside.  He required immediate, extensive cardiac intervention and was being prepped for his procedure just 33 minutes after his arrival.  My husband's cardiology team was led by Dr. John Sinden.  Both the staff and Dr. Sinden himself called me with updates on my husband's condition and progress during his procedure.

The care he received was outstanding.  We returned to WakeMed at the end of 2008 so Dr. Sinden could perform the second procedure my husband required.  My husband will continue to be treated by Dr. Sinden.  The 16-hour trip is well worth it.

The outstanding staff at WakeMed saved my husband's life that day, and I thank God every day that he chose WakeMed. I could go on forever about the doctors, nurses and staff.  You cannot go wrong in trusting your health to WakeMed."

-Danielle from Douglasville, GA

"I am 48 years old, and I needed quadruple bypass surgery five weeks ago.  The care I received from the doctors and nurses was amazing.  The recovery room nurse stayed by my side and offered comforting words to my family and me, and even came up to the floor to check on me the next day.  The floor nurses made me feel as if I were the only patient they were taking care of.  I appreciate it all!"
