One day, out of nowhere, Naima started having trouble breathing. She told her mom and they decided to go to the doctor.
It was then that she and her mom found out that Naima had asthma. Naima was scared after hearing the doctor's diagnosis. Luckily, her mom took her to WakeMed Children's, where she began working with the medical staff in the Children's Asthma Program.
She knows how to use her asthma supplies all by herself, even though she is only six years old. And since working with the program, Naima's asthma has improved dramatically.
Thanks to the Children's Asthma Program, Naima knows when she needs to go to the Emergency Department, as well as what questions to ask and what information to give the nurses and doctors.
On the few occasions she has had asthma attacks, she and her mom have gone to the WakeMed Apex Healthplex Emergency Department, and they have always had positive experiences. Naima's mother, Camille feels more confident too, knowing her daughter is under the care of the WakeMed medical staff.
Sarah Lineberry is part of the staff that works in the Asthma Program, and Camille says she is like Naima's "guardian angel." "It's not just going to a doctor's appointment," says Camille, "it's like going to visit a friend."
