Surgical Services

 J. Duncan Phillips, MD
At WakeMed, we are proud to offer a comprehensive range of outpatient and inpatient pediatric surgical services for children at our Raleigh Campus.

J. Duncan Phillips, MD, leads these services as Surgeon-in-Chief and Director of Pediatric Surgery for WakeMed Children's Hospital. His expertise and experience greatly enhances access to pediatric surgical services for the children in Wake County. Dr. Phillips is joined by two other talented surgeons - Dr. George Wadie and Dr. J. David Hoover, who see patients in private practice in both Raleigh and North Raleigh at our two WakeMed Physician Practices locations.

The practice specializes in minimally-invasive surgical procedures and uses laparoscopy and thoracoscopy techniques while operating on children. At WakeMed, about one third of our surgeries are done using this technology, compared to the average pediatric surgeon that uses this technique 10 percent of the time.

Our Children's Surgical Services Team

WakeMed Children's Hospital is among a select few U.S. facilities to have three pediatric anesthesiologists and four fellow-trained pediatric radiologists on staff. They are experienced in supporting pediatric patients during highly specialized, intricate surgeries.

Our surgical services team also includes child life specialists and rehab specialists. The child life specialists work with the kids in both outpatient and inpatient surgery to help calm their fears and anxieties regarding upcoming procedures.

A team of pediatric rehabilitation therapists work specifically in the Children's Hospital to help patients recover from surgical procedures and help them to prepare for everyday life once discharged home.
