Community Outreach

At WakeMed, we believe that being a good neighbor means giving back to our community.

By underwriting and providing volunteer support for a variety of activities and events in our community, we are helping strengthen local families and support positive parenting.

Families First Club
This free membership is offered to families with children ages 10 and under so they can receive our newsletter and invites to fun and educational community events.

A Trip to WakeMed
A Trip to WakeMed is an interactive and informative program especially for kindergarten classes in Wake County. WakeMed nurses and therapists teach the program to help children learn what to expect if they have to go to the hospital to help alleviate children's fears of hospitals, staff and equipment.  Teachers learn with their students and receive a goody bag with props such as a surgical mask, gloves, shoe covers and caps to use in the classroom.

WakeMed Safe Sitter® Classes
This two-day program for kids ages 11 to 14 teaches participants to proper child care skills and techniques for handling medical emergencies.

Safe Kids Wake County
WakeMed serves as the lead agency with Safe Kids Wake County, a coalition of area organizations, businesses and individuals interested in child safety.
The mission of Safe Kids Wake County is clear - to reduce preventable injuries and death in Wake County children ages 14 and under from:

  • Motor vehicle collisions
  • Pedestrian incidents
  • Bicycle crashes
  • Fire & scald burns
  • Falls
  • Airway obstructions
  • Sports injuries
  • Drownings
  • Poisonings

Safe Kids Wake County identifies and targets the injury problems most prevalent in the area, and then, by calling on the combined resources of the diverse membership, plans and implements strategies to address those problems by providing educational programs for children and families and distributing lifesaving safety devices to families in need.
