Patient Condition Reports

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) dictates that health care organizations are only allowed to release a one-word patient condition reports when queried with patient's name spelled correctly. During normal business hours, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. Monday to Friday, media should contact the public relations department at (919) 350-8120 for patient condition reports.  After hours or on holidays, please contact the hospital operator (919) 350-8000 and your call will be routed appropriately.

Patient Condition Definitions:

GOOD - Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious and comfortable. Indicators are excellent.
FAIR - Vital signs are stable and within normal limits. Patient is conscious, but may be uncomfortable. Indicators are favorable.
SERIOUS - Vital signs may be unstable and are not within normal limits. Patient is acutely ill. Indicators are questionable.
CRITICAL - Vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. Patient may be unconscious. Indicators are unfavorable.

In some circumstances, the hospital will not be able to release information if the patient or their family has asked for privacy. If a patient has requested this privacy designation, no information can be released about that patient and their presence in a WakeMed facility cannot be confirmed.
