Preventable Injuries

Preventable injuries are the number one killer of children ages 14 and under in the U.S.  Each year one out of every four children is hurt seriously enough to require medical attention.  These injuries cost society $175 billion annually.  Ninety percent of these injuries could be prevented if families took the simple steps necessary to protect their children.

As the area's leading provider of emergency and pediatric care, WakeMed is dedicated to educating the community.  Our Injury Prevention Team is actively involved in programs and events, designed to raise awareness of preventable injuries.

Outreach efforts are organized locally through WakeMed programs and events and regionally through the Capital Area Regional Advisory Committee, whose mission is to participate in the development of standardized regional trauma care as well as the establishment and maintenance of a coordinated trauma system to promote optimal trauma care for all citizens.
