Obtaining Patient Information
WakeMed telephone operators are happy to provide callers with the location of a patient and connect them to the appropriate patient room or nursing station. However, operators are prohibited by HIPAA regulations from releasing any information regarding the patient's condition. Callers will need to gather condition information from the patient or patient's family.
Parking
Raleigh Campus: Parking for visitors is available in P1 Parking Deck 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.. A pedestrian bridge connects P1 Parking Deck to the Visitor Entrance in the Heart Tower & Children's Hospital, which is located in the First Floor Visitor Lobby. A reception/information desk is located in the lobby. Shuttle service is available from the Visitor Entrance 24 hours a day. Please call 919-350-8170 or 919-350-8171 if you would like an escort to the parking decks.
WakeMed Cary Hospital: The Main Entrance is locked from 8:30 pm to 6 am. If you would like a security escort to the parking lot, call extension 2000 from any hospital phone.
Please note: If you or your children currently have an acute illness with any of the following symptoms, please do not visit WakeMed out of respect for our patients.
- Sore throat
- Fever
- Headache
- Coughing, nasal drainage, or stuffy head
- Generalized body aches
- Diarrhea within the past 24 hours
- Vomiting within the past 24 hours
Waiting Areas
For the comfort and convenience of visitors, there is a designated waiting area near each nursing unit.
Raleigh Campus: The Critical Care Waiting Room (ext. 8296) is the waiting area for families of patients in NCCU, CICU, CTICU, CVICU, STICU, MICU, PACU, or OR. The Day Surgery Center Waiting Room is on the second floor above Patient Registration.
WakeMed Cary Hospital: There is a special waiting room for the 2 West Intensive Care Unit.

Dining & Coffee
On the Raleigh Campus, dining facilities are located on the first floor of the hospital.
Café 3000 features grill, entrée, made-to-order and pizza stations, alongside a salad bar, express meals, desserts and baked goods. Diners may also enjoy Larry's Beans locally roasted organic coffee and an area dedicated to sugar free, fat free, or gluten free food items. The hours are 6:30 am to 8 pm and midnight to 4 am. Au Bon Pain Café-Bakery is located in the Raleigh Campus Commons, on the first floor. The café offers fresh baked goods, gourmet sandwiches, salads, fresh-brewed coffee and espresso as well as a lineup of hot breakfast sandwiches and eight daily rotating specialty soups. The hours are Monday through Friday, from 6 am to 10 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, from 7 am to 9 pm.
At WakeMed Cary Hospital, guests may dine in Points West Cafe on the ground floor or The Bistro on the first floor.
Telephones
In-house telephone numbers are just five digits. For outside local calls, simply dial 9 + the local number. There is no charge for a local call. When making a long distance call on the Raleigh Campus, dial 9 + 0 + area code + number.
At WakeMed Cary Hospital, dial 67 to access an outside long distance line. At both locations, an operator will come on the line before your call is completed. Please tell the operator whether you are making a collect call, or whether you would like the call to be billed to your home or to a credit card. Long distance calls cannot be billed to a patient's room.
Cell Phones
Due to the operation of some hospital equipment via radio transmission, the use of personal cellular phones is prohibited throughout several areas of the hospital. Please take note of the signage marking these areas. Also, as a courtesy to our patients and visitors, please silence your cell phone upon entering the hospital.
The Gift Shops
Raleigh Campus: The Gift Shop on the Raleigh Campus is located on the first floor between the A/B and C elevators near the outpatient pharmacy. The shop is open from 8:30 am to 8 pm on weekdays, and from 10 am to 7 pm on weekends.
Cary Hospital: The Gift Shop is on the first floor near the Women's Pavilion & Birthplace. Hours of operation are from 8 am to 7 pm, Monday through Friday and from 11 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
Gifts for Patients
Please check with the patient's nurse before bringing gifts of food or drink. Also, check first with the nurses before bringing any gifts to the Critical Care Units.
Banking
There are two automated teller machines on the Raleigh Campus - one located in the Health Park, and the other just outside Patient Registration on the first floor. At WakeMed Cary Hospital, an ATM is available in the Atrium Lobby.
Chapel
On the WakeMed Raleigh Campus, WakeMed Spiritual Care hosts daily devotional services in the meditation chapel on the third floor. Please call 919-350-8556 for an updated schedule. If you would like to talk privately with a chaplain, please call extension 08556 or dial 8000 and ask that a chaplain be paged.
At WakeMed Cary Hospital, a meditation room is located on the first floor near the Intensive Care Unit.
Mail
Letters and packages for patients are delivered Monday through Friday by WakeMed volunteers. Letters and parcels that arrive after patients have left are forwarded to their homes. You can leave outgoing mail at the nurses' station or give it to a volunteer. A mailbox is located just outside the Visitor Entrance.
Well-wishers may send mail to patients at the main WakeMed mailing address. Please make sure you know the patient's full name. The mail will arrive at the patient's room faster if our volunteers can match the name on the incoming mail to the patient's name in our computer system:
