Title
WakeMed Wins Approval to Add 14 Rehab Beds - Archived
Date

Article
RALEIGH, N.C. (July 29, 2011) – WakeMed Health & Hospitals has been approved to add 14 inpatient beds to its rehabilitation hospital located on the Raleigh Campus. WakeMed was awarded the beds in a competitive Certificate of Need (CON) process by the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation.

On project completion, WakeMed Rehab Hospital will grow from 84 beds to 98. The beds will be added in existing space on the WakeMed Raleigh Campus, which was vacated following the addition of a new patient tower in summer 2010. The space will be renovated and, absent any competitive appeals, will be operational by October 2012.

WakeMed Rehab Hospital opened in 1989 and is the only inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Wake County. WakeMed Rehab Hospital draws patients from a 19-county region in North Carolina, and consistently maintains an occupancy of more than 90 percent. The hospital serves patients who have suffered severe neurological, spinal cord or other traumatic injury or neuromuscular disorder, requiring intensive rehabilitation often following a stay in an acute care hospital.

Most recently, WakeMed added 16 beds to its rehabilitation hospital in fiscal year 2008 to 2009, but due to population growth and patient demand, occupancy rates for the rehabilitation hospital remained high.

The 14 additional rehabilitation beds were allocated in North Carolina’s 2011 State Medical Facilities Plan.
