Combining medical technology and the human touch, the allied health professional administers care around the clock, responding to the needs of a wide variety of patients. Allied Health and Allied Health Support positions range from Medical Technologist in our Pathology Lab to Cardiovascular Specialist in our state-of-the-art Heart Center.

Both WakeMed Raleigh Campus and Cary Hospital offer inpatient and outpatient pharmacy services to meet the needs of our patients, physicians, and staff. Clinical pharmacy specialists practice in multiple areas including internal medicine, pediatrics, cardiology, rehabilitation and critical care. The department currently has over 140 staff members including pharmacists, specialists, technicians, and supporting staff.
WakeMed Pharmacists serve as a resource to both patients and caregivers by offering information and guidance related to pharmaceuticals. To support the patient care, research, and educational missions of WakeMed, the department provides a number of pharmaceutical services, including:
- Automated dispensing from unit-based cabinets,
- Centralized preparation of sterile products,
- Pharmacist initiated therapeutic substitution, renal dosing, and IV-to-PO conversion programs
- Clinical pharmacy services in pediatrics, cardiology, intensive care, and drug information
- Investigational drug services,
- Adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting program
The Pharmacy department strongly encourages and supports employee growth through WakeMed's tuition assistance program and by modifying work schedules to accommodate school schedules.
In addition, the department provides support for the numerous ACPE-approved Continuing Education programs that are provided on WakeMed's campus. The Pharmacy department also provides an extensive training program that is designed to equip the new staff member with the competencies required to practice in a regional tertiary care center.
Surgical Physician Assistant Residency Program
A postgraduate residency is a wonderful way to attain additional training and skills. At WakeMed Health & Hospitals, we pride ourselves on providing high-quality, evidence-based practices for our patients. Participants in the Postgraduate Residency Program receive the intense clinical and didactic training necessary to gain proficiency and marketability in the areas of trauma, critical care, general and orthopaedic surgery.
WakeMed's rehabilitation hospital is the largest and most comprehensive in the area and is complemented by day treatment and outpatient rehabilitation services in six locations throughout the region. WakeMed Rehabilitation Services professionals treat a wide variety of adult and pediatric patients, including those suffering from brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, neuromuscular disorders, and orthopaedic injuries. Rehab staff members benefit from using state-of-the-art equipment, large, open gym areas, a therapeutic swimming pool, and our unique Health Park to provide the highest level of care available in the area.
- Physical Therapy - WakeMed Physical Therapists provide direct physical therapy treatment programs for our patients.
- Occupational Therapy - WakeMed Occupational Therapists work with patients to implement comprehensive treatment plans, construct appropriate orthotic devices, educate patients on the use of adaptive equipment, and provide patient education and exercise programs.
- Speech Language Pathology - WakeMed Speech Language Pathologists offer diagnostic and treatment services to patients with speech/language needs.
WakeMed offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient radiology services in four of our facilities, performing more than 270,000 procedures a year. Using state-of-the-art imaging equipment and technology, WakeMed operates six CT scanners (64 &16 slice), CT Fluoroscopy, three fixed and one mobile MRI scanners along with new nuclear medicine, radiological, RF, angiography, ultrasound and C-arm technology in a completely filmless PACS environment. WakeMed also offers a Women's Imaging Service featuring the latest in equipment, procedures and philosophy.
Our imaging services professionals enjoy a wide variety of training and educational opportunities, along with enhanced professional opportunities through our Career Ladders Program. The Imaging Services team includes a designated education manager who helps facilitate career growth and advancement. Team leader, supervisory and management positions are available for qualified employees.
The Ultrasound Department is a vital part of imaging services at WakeMed. Our highly trained registered technologists utilize the latest in ultrasound technology to offer exceptional care to our pediatric, Emergency Department, and inpatient and outpatient populations. New personnel can expect excellent training programs tailored to the individual.
The Radiology Department provides high quality clinical and diagnostic services in support of our Emergency Department, inpatient and outpatient populations. Diagnostic services are located in a number of areas in the hospital and surrounding community to provide quick and convenient care to these patients. The department prides itself on teamwork, its modern equipment, and the continued staff involvement in decision-making processes.
- Nuclear Medicine
The Nuclear Medicine Department is a multi-camera department with a focus on Cardiac Stress Imaging as well as general imaging services. It offers technologists an environment in which they can provide high quality care to their patients while obtaining state-of-the-art images.
The MRI Department at WakeMed performs a variety of MRI exams including head, body, orthopaedic and cardiac services. This progressive and fast-paced environment provides an excellent training opportunity for exceptional technologists who are willing to learn and to be a part of a growing team.
- Computerized Tomography (CT)
The CT Department at WakeMed offers modern diagnostic services to our Emergency Department, inpatient and outpatient populations. Our staff of radiologists and registered technologists is highly trained in the latest imaging techniques and keep abreast of all the latest developments, including guided interventional procedures, 3D and multi-planar reformatting for fractures, myelography, spine and bone work. Utilizing our 3D workstation we offer a full range of CT angiography including: cerebral, carotid, renal, pulmonary, visceral, and stent follow-up. The main focus of our CT services, however, is in support of our Trauma Center and two Emergency Departments, which is vital to the well being of our community.
The Angiography Department at WakeMed offers a full range of diagnostic and interventional services. Staffed by specially trained registered technologists, registered nurses, and radiologists, this area of Radiology is one of the most rapidly growing areas in medicine today. Through the use of small catheters guided by state-of-the-art imaging equipment, these procedures are safer and, in many cases, have replaced traditional surgery. As new techniques are developed, we continue to improve patient care as well as offer more cost-effective treatments.
WakeMed has three ACR accredited mammography departments serving locations in Wake and Johnston counties. Screening, diagnostic and stereotactic biopsy exams are offered to our patients who can expect private and convenient services.
