Children & Adolescent Services
Pediatric rehabilitation focuses on the unique needs of children. At WakeMed, children are often referred to our pediatric rehabilitation facilities rather than being treated by specialists who typically work with adults. Our pediatric rehabilitation services include:
- Speech therapy
- Occupational therapy for tasks such as writing
- Training in the use of prosthetics
- Developmental evaluations
In addition to addressing congenital conditions, pediatric rehabilitation can also address acquired injuries, ranging from amputations to acccidents such as burns. The earlier rehabilitation is provided, the better the outlook for the patient.
Pediatric patients at WakeMed are supervised by physicians who have completed a residency in rehabilitation and physical therapy. A patient's therapy care team includes audiologists, speech pathologists, physical therapists and psychologists, among others.
At WakeMed, Clinical Case Management, Neuropsychology and/or Chaplain Services help patients and their families with specific coping and adjustment issues. We are committed to encouraging family involvement in the treatment, assessment, and continued care planning for all children and adolescent patients. The developmental and social needs of young people are addressed in individual, family and group treatment activities, and, whenever possible, we emphasize leisure/diversionary activities and peer interaction.
Our pediatric services are located at the following outpatient locations: Raleigh Campus, Rehab Hospital, Wake Forest Road Outpatient Rehab Center and Clayton Medical Park.
