WakeMed Introduces Maternal Fetal Medicine Service

In September 2007, WakeMed Faculty Physicians – OB/GYN practice welcomed Dr. Steven Wells, MD, to lead our new Maternal Fetal Medicine service. Wells is Board certified in both Obstetrics/Gynecology and Maternal Fetal Medicine, and brings nearly 20 years of experience caring for high-risk pregnancy patients.

Since joining WakeMed Faculty Physicians, Dr. Wells helped introduce a new maternal fetal medicine service that provides an on-site Level II ultrasound service for the many high-risk pregnancy patients we serve. WakeMed delivers nearly 2,000 high-risk babies per year in the Women’s Pavilion & Birthplace Raleigh. The introduction of the maternal fetal medicine service and the addition of Dr. Wells to the WakeMed Faculty Physicians staff will allow us to better serve the needs of our patients.

“Prenatal diagnosis and education are extremely important for the health of both mothers and babies,” explains Dr. Steven Wells. “WakeMed physicians have done an outstanding job of managing high-risk pregnancies and births for many years. I am pleased to join the team and to introduce this new level of service in the best interest of our high-risk patients.”

Wells’ office and the new Maternal Fetal Medicine Service will soon move to a designated area in the Raleigh Campus Medical Office Building. The office will include three ultrasound machines and clinical office space.

Wells joins us most recently from Duke Medicine, where he began and directed the Duke Perinatal Consultant practice in Raleigh. He holds a bachelor of science degree in engineering operations from North Carolina State University and a doctor of medicine degree from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine. He completed internship and residency programs at UNC Hospitals in the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He also completed a fellowship in Maternal Fetal Medicine at the UNC School of Medicine.
