Spiritual Care

Whatever your religious preferences, the Department of Spiritual Care at WakeMed can provide spiritual guidance and support for you and your family or friends during a hospital stay.

About our Chaplains and How They Can Help

Our Chaplains are specially trained to work with hospital patients and families and are available 24-hours-a-day, seven days a week to minister to your needs.  To find out what our Chaplains can do to help you and your family, please click here

Please Call

If you're a patient, family member or concerned friend and would like to request a chaplain visit, please dial extension 8556 at the Raleigh Campus or page the on-call chaplain from outside the hospital at 393-6543.

At WakeMed Cary Hospital, dial extension 02536 to request a chaplain. If you cannot reach a chaplain at this extension, call the hospital switchboard by dialing 350-2000 and have the operator page a chaplain for you.

For Pastors / Clergy

Thank you in advance for your interest in serving the patients and their families here at WakeMed during their time of need.  Ordained ministers serving as pastors of local churches within a 50-mile radius of WakeMed should apply for a permanent Clergy ID Badge.  Once approved, you will have free parking at WakeMed and have the ability to visit your parishoners during visiting hours.  Click here for more information and for a Clergy ID Badge application.

Meditation Chapel

There is a meditation chapel located on the third floor at our Raleigh Campus.  Please ask our receptionist at the Visitors Entrance Lobby for directions.

At WakeMed Cary Hospital, a quiet room is also available for patients, family members or friends.  A new meditation garden is located in the center courtyard of the facility.  Both areas at the Raleigh campus and WakeMed Cary Hospital are open at all times for prayer, meditation and times of silence.

Available Opportunities

Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)

WakeMed's Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program offers ministers, seminarians and laity the opportunity to be placed directly in a supervised setting with patients and families experiencing a crisis situation.

The various skills learned through interaction with patients and families is valuable to each participant's individual ministry. CPE Application

Urban Ministry

The Urban Ministry Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) student is invited on a journey of discovery into his or her own life story.  This program provides the student with an opportunity for in-depth self-study and self-understanding, which translates into a rich ability to identify with "the least of these."

Through this process, the student will be able to offer care and pastoral counseling as a clinically trained pastor to those who have lost their way or who have been broken by life and relationship failures.  The placements include, but are not limited to: The Open Door Medical Clinic, Helen Wright Women's Shelter, South Salisbury Street Men's Shelter, AIDS Service Alliance - Carolinas, and various addiction treatment facilities.
