Letter to President Obama Requesting Guideline Change on Use of Surgical Masks for H1N1 This week, three of the most powerful infection control agencies in the country - SHEA, IDSA and APIC - joined forces to submit a letter to President Obama requesting the modification of federal recommendations regarding the use of N95 masks in health care workers working with suspect H1N1 patients. The letter cites numerous scientific studies that demonstrate the efficacy of using surgical masks in these clinical situations in hopes that the government will modify their guidelines. In the meantime, WakeMed continues to work on securing ample supply of N95 masks during a national supply shortage affecting hospitals throughout the country. Important Reminder: Department Holiday Functions and Children Please remember that, due to WakeMed's new visitor policy that restricts children under age 18 from visiting the hospital, children are not permitted to attend any departmental holiday social function. This restriction has been implemented to help prevent the spread of flu among patients, visitors and staff. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Influenza Employee Intranet Site Please remember to check this site regularly for important employee updates regarding seasonal and H1N1 flu including updated testing guidelines for H1N1, state reports on the status of H1N1 in North Carolina and updated droplet precautions. Pneumatic Tube Stations in C Tower to be Shut Down November 17 On Tuesday, November 17, the pneumatic tube stations in the Raleigh Campus C Tower (including 3C, 4C, 5C and 6C) will be taken down so that work can be done to replace them with six-inch stations.
