2010 Circle of Excellence - Nominations Due September 1 It's that time of year! HR is wrapping up the 2010 Circle of Excellence (COE) nomination process this summer - please think about any coworkers who go above and beyond to help WakeMed achieve its corporate goals. You can nominate a coworker anytime in any of these five categories: Quality Outcomes, Unsurpassed Service, Workforce Excellence, Fiscal Responsibility or Market Development. Nominations can be submitted online or via paper copy to Human Resources.
Flu Shots Coming Soon! The seasonal influenza vaccine is here, and Occupational Health & Safety will soon be announcing the 2010 WakeMed flu shot schedule. Stay tuned! Vaccine will be available for all staff, physicians and volunteers. The goal is to achieve 100 percent compliance, with every member of the WakeMed team either receiving a flu shot at WakeMed, submitting a flu declination form or submitting proof of receiving the vaccine from another provider. Please note that the 2010-2011 vaccine provides protection against A/H1N1 (pandemic) influenza as well as influenza A/H3N2 and influenza B.

Loop Road Street Paving On September 2 & 3, Loop Road on the Raleigh Campus will be re-paved from the P5 Parking Deck entrance to Swineburne Street. This is in conjunction with the paving of the new Health Park/Rehabilitation Hospital circle and will reduce the road from two lanes to one lane. Flag people will help coordinate traffic flow.
Health Park/Rehabilitation Hospital Entrance Opening September 13 On Monday, September 13, the Health Park/Rehabilitation Hospital entrance on the Raleigh Campus will re-open for visitors and patients. Staff should continue to use other designated entrances.
Andrews Center Parking Deck Resurfacing: Important Dates to Remember Concrete replacement work is almost complete on the top level of the Andrews Center Parking Deck. A finishing coat and restriping will take place in two phases. The deck will be closed to all traffic starting Friday, September 3, through Monday, September 6. On Wednesday, September 8, the ramp and drop-off areas will re-open. A small section of the deck between the ramp and New Bern Ave. will remain closed through Tuesday, September 14, and will re-open on Wednesday, September 15, marking the completion of the project.
Reminder about Lawson Purchase Orders Strategic Sourcing and Accounts Payable remind you that a Lawson Purchase Order must be generated for materials, supplies, non-capital equipment, one-time repairs and maintenance, services, short-term rental, computer supplies, reference materials, and other miscellaneous items. (Please refer to Administrative Policy: Management Staff Approval Authority for Capital and Non-capital Expenditures). With an urgent need, contact your contract specialist or Strategic Sourcing (ext. 00400) from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm. Off-hours emergent acquisitions may be handled by the appropriate member of Management Staff, with necessary supporting documentation provided to Strategic Sourcing on the next business day.
Congratulations, Dr. Jerry Bernstein! Dr. Jerry C. Bernstein, a long-time pediatrician with Raleigh Pediatric Associates and member of the WakeMed Medical Staff, recently received the David T. Tayloe, Sr. Award for Outstanding Community Service from the North Carolina Pediatric Society. The award is given to a pediatrician who has made exceptional contributions in his/her local community or state, including efforts beyond the practice setting. At WakeMed, Dr. Bernstein served as president of the Medical Staff, chair of the Pediatric Department and first-ever chair of the WakeMed Foundation. He is a current member of the WakeMed Board of Directors and has been active with many WakeMed clinical committees, including the Medical Executive Staff, the Joint Conference and the Quality Assurance committees.

Help Lead the Fight Against Childhood Obesity On Saturday, September 25 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, Advocates for Health in Action and Community Care of Wake and Johnston Counties are teaming up to offer a training conference for health care providers interested in becoming advocates to help reverse the trend of childhood obesity.
Up to Donate Blood at the Raleigh Campus or Corporate Center Blood Drive The Volunteers at WakeMed Raleigh Campus are hosting their annual fall blood drive on Wednesday, September 1, at two WakeMed locations - the Andrews Center on the Raleigh Campus from 7 am to 4 pm, and the WakeMed Corporate Center from 10 am to 2:30 pm. This year, it's more convenient than ever to sign up! All registration should be completed online by visiting the WakeMedWeb or www.wakemed.givesblood.org. New Director of Imaging Services on the Raleigh Campus Holly Carpenter, RT (R)(M), has been selected as the new director for Imaging Services on the Raleigh Campus. After 13 years at WakeMed, Holly has worked in various Imaging Services leadership roles and is well-suited for her new position.
