RALEIGH, N.C. (May 18, 2022)WakeMed Raleigh Campus, WakeMed Cary Hospital and WakeMed North Hospital received top recognition as being among the best maternity hospitals in the U.S., according to a national ranking by Newsweek based on data from Statista. The distinction recognizes WakeMed as a proven leader in providing the highest level of quality care for expectant mothers and their babies.

Newsweek’s 2022 list of Best Maternity Hospitals spotlights facilities that have excelled in providing care to mothers, newborns and their families and have fully met Statista’s standards for maternity care on evidence-based, nationally standardized metrics.

The rankings were determined based on a nationwide online survey in which hospital managers and maternity healthcare professionals (e.g., neonatal care providers and OB/GYNs) were asked to recommend leading maternity hospitals; medical key performance indicator data relevant to maternity care (e.g., a hospital's rate of cesarean births); and patient satisfaction data (e.g., how patients rated a hospital's medical staff for responsiveness and communication).

WakeMed North Hospital’s data was incorporated into Raleigh Campus’ tabulations because the two facilities operate under the same CMS license.

“Our dedication to providing safe, quality, compassionate care is reflected in everything we do,” said Dr. Chris DeRienzo, WakeMed chief medical officer and SVP of Quality. “More than anything, these awards recognize the WakeMed team’s deep commitment to delivering the best possible experience for every mother, baby and family. We are proud of their work and proud to keep serving the moms and families of Wake County and beyond.”

With three full-service hospitals offering a patient-focused birthing experience, WakeMed Health & Hospitals delivers more babies than any other health system in Wake County — more than 8,600 new lives each year.

WakeMed’s birthing centers at each hospital offer personalized care for the entire family, state-of-the-art facilities, expert care for babies needing extra help, lactation/feeding support, childbirth and parenting class and access to WakeMed doula services.

Specializing in high-risk deliveries, WakeMed Raleigh Campus offers a comprehensive program of services and staff to protect both mother and child during pregnancy and immediately after birth. It is also home to a Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) that is a world leader in developmentally supportive care.

The birthplaces at WakeMed Cary and North Hospitals offers high-quality obstetric care in a flexible, family-centered environment with beautifully appointed private suites, a Level III Special Care Nursey and expert physicians and neonatologists.

WakeMed is designated as a Blue Distinction Center — the highest level of designation — by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina for Maternity Services. Additionally, both Raleigh Campus and Cary Hospital have been awarded by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE) while all three hospitals received four stars from the NC Maternity Center Breastfeeding-Friendly Designation Review Committee. In 2021, WakeMed was named the best place to have a baby in the Triangle by the News & Observer's Raleigh's BEST awards.
