WakeMed Names Its First Chief Resident for Internal Medicine Residency Program
May 4, 2023RALEIGH, N.C. (May 4, 2023) – Dr. Sherry Wang will serve as the inaugural chief resident for WakeMed’s Internal Medicine Residency Program, which welcomed its first class in June 2021. Dr. Wang will assume her new position in early June 2024, upon completion of her internal medicine residency training at WakeMed.
In this role, Dr. Wang will be a key educator and administrator for the program, leading, mentoring, and advocating for current residents while representing WakeMed and the residency program outside of the health system.
WakeMed’s Internal Medicine Residency Program is a three-year, community-based hospital training program that provides residents with a high level of interaction with attending physicians as well as hands-on access to patient care. The program offers opportunities to learn in both inpatient and outpatient settings to develop the necessary skills to enter a community-based practice or a hospitalist career.
“Dr. Wang brings a long list of attributes, abilities and experiences that will serve her and our growing program well. We are truly fortunate that she has indicated this interest in remaining to serve WakeMed and the community,” commented John Perry, MD, vice president of Graduate Medical Education at WakeMed.
Originally from Aspen, Colorado, Dr. Wang attended the University of Colorado at Boulder where she received a bachelor’s degree in integrative physiology and psychology-neuroscience. She subsequently earned a master’s degree in physiology at North Carolina State University and a Doctor of Medicine from St. George’s University School of Medicine in St. George, Grenada, where she graduated summa cum laude.
During her internal medicine residency training at WakeMed, Dr. Wang has also served as a resident member of the health system’s Graduate Medical Education Committee and a resident faculty member for Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine.
WakeMed has been a teaching hospital for more than 50 years, with strong partnerships with Campbell University, the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, Duke Health, and Wake Tech Community College. As a major teaching institution, WakeMed provides teaching programs and residencies approved by the American Medical Association’s (AMA) Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education—including its Internal Medicine Residency Program.
