Every day, from 2 to 4pm, is now Family Bonding Time across all WakeMed postpartum units. Giving birth and welcoming new life into the world is a very important time for new parents and their babies. Plus, it’s exhausting for everyone involved – especially new moms!

This special initiative gives new mothers the time they need to rest and recover physically from delivery while providing uninterrupted time for new parents to bond with their newborns.

During Family Bonding Time, WakeMed:

  • Dims lights and decreases noise
  • Decreases interruptions from staff unless new mothers request help or assistance
  • Asks visitors to wait in the waiting room unless the new mother is expecting visitors

“Having a baby is an exciting yet overwhelming time for new mothers and families,” explains Deirdre Mattera, RN, clinical supervisor & educator, WakeMed Women’s Pavilion & Birthplace. “Setting aside just a few hours a day for an uninterrupted period of rest can have a positive effect on a mother’s ability to recover, while also promoting family bonding – which we know is critical for infant health and well-being.”
