Effective Treatment for Gynecologic Conditions
When medication and non-invasive procedures are unable to relieve symptoms, surgery remains the accepted and most effective treatment for a range of gynecologic conditions. These include, but are not limited to, cervical and uterine cancer, uterine fibroidsfibroids, endometriosis, uterine prolapseprolapse and menorrhagia or excessive bleeding.
Traditional open gynecologic surgery, using a large incision for access to the uterus and surrounding region, has been the standard approach to many gynecologic procedures. However, these procedures result in more pain and discomfort, longer recovery and potential impact nearby organs and nerves.
For women facing gynecologic surgery, there are now better options thanks to minimally invasive procedures. In some cases, our board-certified gynecologists can access these regions through a vaginal approach or through a series of very tiny abdominal incisions. These laparoscopic and robotically perfected techniques offered at WakeMed provide women with a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.
Common conditions that can be performed using minimally invasive surgeries
- Heavy Menstrual Periods
- Uterine Fibroids
- Endometrial Polyps
- Hysterectomy
- Ovarian Cysts/Growths
- Pelvic Organ Prolapse
- Sterilization
We also offer diagnostic laparoscopy for gynecological conditions.
The American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists is also an excellent resource for women interested in learning more about minimally invasive surgical options.
