Planning Your Admission

The first step in planning your admission to either the Rehab Hospital or the Neuro Care Unit is to meet with an admissions representative from WakeMed Rehab. This representative will determine which treatment program best meets your needs.

Next, if needed, a WakeMed Rehab staff member will contact your insurance company about benefits coverage and pre-admission approval requirements. We will coordinate efforts with your insurance company and keep you fully informed.

At your request, a WakeMed Rehab or Neuro Care Unit staff member will be happy to provide you and your family with a tour. Finally, our staff will work with you and your family to plan your admission. We will coordinate your transfer with your treatment team.

Rehab Hospital Admission Criteria


To be approved for admission to the Rehab Hospital, you must meet the program’s admission criteria. You must:

• Be medically stable.
• Require the care and attention of a physician and nurse 24 hours a day.
• Require intensive rehabilitation services from at least two therapy disciplines.
• Be able to tolerate a combined total of three hours of rehabilitation 5 out of 7 days.
• Be able to benefit from rehabilitation.
• Be unable to be cared for in a less intensive level of care (such as home care, outpatient rehabilitation, or nursing facility care).
• Be planning to return home following your rehab stay.

What to Bring


Comfort is key. Because you will participate in therapy, bring comfortable clothes to wear. It not only helps you get back in the habit of looking and feeling well again, it also gives you practice in getting dressed and undressed. You will have help whenever you need it, but we will encourage you to do everything you can for yourself. Here are the items you should bring:

•  Comfortable, loose-fitting, washable pants and tops
•  Undergarments
•  Socks
•  Non-skid shoes, such as tennis shoes
•  Night clothes, such as pajamas or gown, robe, and slippers
•  Toiletry items such as comb, brush, makeup, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant and razor
•  Insurance identification cards
•  List of all medications being taken at home before your hospitalization

For your protection, we suggest you leave valuables such as iPads, computers, and jewely at home, as WakeMed is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
