Causes for Rejection
Sample not refrigerated. Frozen sample not frozen within 24 hours of collection.
Patient Preparation
Verify that the patient has not had vitamins containing folic acid during the previous three to five days; if so, consult physician. Patients should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at least 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample.
Instructions
One whole blood tube must be refrigerated and is stable for 72 hours. Submit in original collection tube.
- Because samples are sent to a referral lab, specimens greater than 48 hours old upon receipt at Raleigh will be rejected.
Pour the entire second whole blood sample into a transport tube and freeze.
- Note: If unable to freeze immediately, the second sample is stable for 24 hours if refrigerated.
IMPORTANT:
- Both samples are stable for short periods of time. Please submit to the Raleigh reference lab section as soon as possible.
- To avoid confusion and potential recollection, both samples must be submitted at the same time.
