Storage or Stability
Stool in sterile container: Ambient - must be in lab <4 hrs post collection.
Stool in Parapak or Cary Blair: Ambient or refrigerated up to four days.
It is recommended that specimens be delivered as soon as possible.
Causes for Rejection
Formed stool.
Unpreserved stool >4 hours old.

Instructions

If testing will not occur within four hours of collection and specimen is in a sterile container it must be transferred to an Orange Parapak or other Cary Blair medium for preservation

TAT
Inpatient and ED specimens are generally tested and resulted within 6 hours of receipt at the Raleigh Laboratory. Outpatient and Outreach specimens may be batched and resulted next day.
