Patient Preparation

Overnight fasting for basal levels. No isotopes administered 24 hours prior to venipuncture. Patient should not be in a stress state at time of drawing. If diabetic, patient should be in good control before drawing specimen. 

Special Instruction: This test may exhibit interference when sample is collected from a person who is consuming a supplement with a high dose of biotin (also termed as vitamin B7 or B8, vitamin H, or coenzyme R). It is recommended to ask all patients who may be indicated for this test about biotin supplementation. Patients should be cautioned to stop biotin consumption at east 72 hours prior to the collection of a sample.

Instructions

Collect into chilled or prefrozen plastic lavender-top (EDTA) tube. After venipuncture, immediately invert tube several times to ensure complete mixture. Separate plasma from cells by centrifugation. Separate plasma into a plastic vial, and freeze within 15 minutes of collection.
