- Nasopharynx (NP) - Eswabs are preferable but cotton, rayon, and Dacron tipped wire shaft swabs are acceptable.
- Sinus - Eswabs are preferable but cotton, rayon, and Dacron tipped wire shaft swabs are acceptable.
- Sinus aspirates - sterile container
- Sputum - Sterile container
- C. diptheria - If C. diptheria is suspected, collect two throat swabs - E-swabs, (NP swabs acceptable but not recommended). Please add order comment "Look for C. diptheria"

Microbiology Specimen Collection and Transport
When suspicious of C. Diptheria - Two Eswabs are collected from any membrane, white spots or inflamed areas of the throat or skin lesions using sterile technique.

Gram stain: normally available within 8 hours of receipt in the laboratory (Stat: 1 hour)
Preliminary culture result : in 24hr
Final culture result : Negative result in 48 hours , Positive result may take more or less than 2 days.
