Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty

What is Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)?

Requiring no surgery and no incision, patients with a BMI of at least 30 now have a non-surgical alternative to bariatric surgery with the endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty.  This procedure is ideal for patients seeking a long-term weight loss solution who are committed to following your physician’s advice and plan of care.

The procedure is performed by a board-certified gastroenterologist in the Advanced Gastrointestinal Suite at WakeMed Cary Hospital. Using an endoscope (a camera attached to a flexible tube that is inserted through your mouth into your stomach), the physician will suture your stomach – reducing it in size by 70-80%. This limits the amount of food you need to feel full, the amount of calories absorbed, and allows you to feel full for longer.

How Much Weight Will I Lose?

The typical ESG patient may lose as much as 50% of their excess body weight after six months and as much as 80% of their excess weight after one year. As with any procedure, results vary for ESG patients. In addition to weight loss, many patients experience other improvements in their health, including lowered blood pressure, better blood sugar control and improvements in sleep apnea symptoms.
