Before Surgeries & Procedures
COVID-19 Testing before Inpatient Surgical Procedures
In alignment with CDC guidance for pre-procedure testing, WakeMed does not require pre-procedure testing for asymptomatic patients prior to scheduled procedures (regardless of vaccination status).
Pre-procedure testing will still be required for all scheduled surgeries for patients who:
- Have any symptoms of COVID-19
- Have been in close contact with a person diagnosed with COVID-19
- If they require an overnight stay following their surgery
WakeMed will continue to test patients admitted through the Emergency Department and patients who cannot communicate their symptoms or exposure status.
Patients who are symptomatic upon arrival at the hospital for surgery will be tested in the pre-procedure area. Pre-procedure patients who have symptoms or an exposure before coming to the hospital can get a PCR test at an area urgent care or pharmacy. There will be a charge for testing. Patients must bring their results with them to the hospital
