About Me
Dr. Gjanje Smith-Mathus is a board-certified urologist with subspecialty certification in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery (FPMRS/urogynecology). Her clinical interests include male and female incontinence and voiding dysfunction, pelvic organ prolapse, vaginal native tissue prolapse repairs and robotic assisted sacrocolpopexy, vesicovaginal fistulae, urethral diverticula and complications related to vaginal mesh.
Dr. Smith-Mathus received her medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine. She completed her urology residency training at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, and her fellowship at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. She brings over a decade of urologic care and surgical services to WakeMed.
Dr. Smith-Mathus believes that practicing medicine and taking care of patients is a privilege. She is committed to treating every patient with compassion, and practices evidence-based, patient-centered care. She treats every patient the way that she would want her family to be treated.
She is committed to addressing health disparities and advancing health equity. She serves on the Society of Women in Urology’s task force on the Role of Women Urologists in Advancing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) in Urology Residency Recruitment, the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) DEI Taskforce and the American Urological Association's Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Dr. Smith-Mathus is also passionate about DEI in the workplace. She obtained a certificate in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the Workplace from the University of South Florida Office of Corporate Training and Professional Education in 2022.
Outside of work, Dr. Smith-Mathus enjoys spending time with her husband, three children and their dog. She also enjoys reading, traveling, cooking, crocheting and listening to music.
