About Me

Dr. Villanueva is a board-certified general surgeon whose clinical interests include advanced laparoscopic and DaVinci surgical robot-assisted techniques in all areas of gastrointestinal surgery, bariatric weight loss surgery, and minimally invasive hernia surgery.

Dr. Villanueva specializes in minimally invasive surgery as it is potentially less painful and often allows for a faster recovery than traditional surgical techniques. He earned his medical degree from the University of Texas – Medical School at Houston and did his general surgery training at Loyola University Medical Center. He then completed advanced fellowship training in Minimally Invasive Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgery at Carolinas Medical Center.

He is a member of the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, as well as a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery.

I was going in for a scary surgery and he put me at ease. Explained everything to me and had all the time in the world for me and questions. After surgery he met with my family and immediately put the am ease aslo. Highly recommend.

When I was having my bariatric exam at the hospital, there was one nurse, I think her name was Theresa who was so kind and gentle and understanding. She, I will say, was the best nurse I have ever had in all my years of dealing with doctors and nurses, and she was genuine, not fake caring. If your hospital had more like her you would never get any complaints.

Had emergency []. Scary not to know surgeon, facility, going through surgery. Well taken care of as inpatient in postpartum. Even though I was not their typical patient, staff were excellent! I am retired RN and good judge of wonderful care. Surgeon was outstanding. Was nervous as I was being put to sleep and one of the OR nurses held me. Thanks to all.

The teams overall interaction with me. Professional, caring and very clear in explaining what the issue was, how to treat it and what was next. Amazing from the front test to the Doctor. Never felt like I was just a number. They truly cared and wanted to help me in any way. Could not say enough about ALL of them. I am grateful to be able to get care a place like this on short notice.

The young lady that took my vitals was very thorough when taking my blood pressure. It seemed higher than usual and I asked her to please take it again but manually. She responded to my request with such kind understanding of my concern! I so appreciated that. But the time that the doctor spent explaining things in such a professional and yet personable manner was outstanding to me! He spoke to me with respect he didn’t speak down to me and I felt comfortable to ask questions him questions and I never felt rushed !
