About Me

Dr. Jeff Abrams is board certified in general surgery and surgical critical care, and his clinical interests are re-operative, breast, laparoscopic and hernia surgery.

Education and Training

He received his medical degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, where he also completed his residency and fellowship in surgical critical care. Dr. Abrams also holds a Bachelor of Art degree in American Studies from Stanford University in Stanford, CA.

He is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the UNC School of Medicine. He is a candidate fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a fellow of the North Carolina Chapter of American College of Surgeons. Dr. Abrams is also a member of the American Trauma Society and the Nathan Womack Surgical Society.

His research has been published in journals such as American Surgeon and The Journal of Trauma, and he has also contributed to the textbook Unbound Surgery.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

From day surgery to inpatient procedures, Dr. Abrams and the other Raleigh surgeons at WakeMed Physician Practices - General Surgery offer expertise in a variety of specialties, including:

  • Breast Care - Diagnostic and Treatment
  • Gallbladder Surgery
  • Hernia Surgery
  • Colon Surgery
  • Robotic-Assisted Surgery
  • Dr. Abrams is proficient at laparoscopic surgery, which is increasingly being used to perform surgical procedures. This method is often preferred because it requires smaller incisions, which generally leads to less scarring and faster recovery times. In laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon makes a small incision or series of small incisions, and inserts an endoscope with a light and tiny camera that allows him to make repairs or diagnoses easily and quickly.

    Hernia Surgery

One type of surgery often performed laparoscopically is hernia surgery. Because there are different types of hernias requiring different types of surgical approaches, you can rely on Dr. Abrams' expertise and experience to help you decide on the best option for you.

A hernia is caused when the abdominal wall weakens and allows the contents of the abdomen to stick out in openings in the abdominal wall muscles. Lifting heavy objects, or even severe coughing and straining, can make a hernia worse. Repairing a hernia requires surgery to attach a mesh material to the hernia area, which strengthens the muscle and supports the tissues.

If you suspect you have a hernia, be sure to seek advice and treatment quickly, before the problem worsens. Dr. Abrams will be your partner in working out the best surgical choice for you, along with a sensible plan for your recovery.
