About Me
Dr. Trevor Upham’s passion for treating the patients and the diseases of the heart, lungs, esophagus and chest and using his problem-solving skills led him to specialize in cardiothoracic surgery. His compassion and empathy for cardiothoracic surgery patients are at the core of his practice. At Georgetown, where he was educated and trained, he began to embrace the principle of cura personalis (care of the entire person) in treating the mind, body and soul of patients with cardiac and thoracic diseases.
Originally from California, Dr. Upham found WakeMed Heart & Vascular Physicians Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery and the Raleigh area to be a perfect match.
“My wife is from Raleigh – in fact she was born at WakeMed. I am proud to be part of the tradition of excellence and innovation at WakeMed. Even more, my unique knowledge and skill set in cardiothoracic surgery matches perfectly with the needs of patients here in North Carolina,” said Dr. Upham.
Compassionate, driven, and well trained, Dr. Upham brings his cutting-edge skills to provide the best possible treatment to his patients. Strong communication with his patients is an essential piece of Dr. Upham’s cardiothoracic surgery practice. When faced with a need for surgery, Dr. Upham takes the time to help patients and their families understand their options. He seeks input from patients and their families and from medical consultants for a multidisciplinary approach to make the right decision for the right treatment at the right time.
Dr. Upham specializes in minimally invasive cardiothoracic surgery, on and off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery, valve repair and replacement surgery, thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) and thoracic surgery for benign and malignant diseases of the lung, esophagus and chest. He has presented internationally on minimally invasive thoracic surgery techniques. At WakeMed, he finds all the tools at the forefront of treating cardiovascular and thoracic disease—a progressive staff, modern facilities, the latest technologies and cutting edge techniques. As a result, Dr. Upham and WakeMed are able to offer patients the most advanced treatments.
Dr. Upham resides in Raleigh with his wife, Catharine, and their two sons. In his spare time he enjoys travelling, scuba diving, cooking, fishing, and golf.
