WakeMed first performed open-heart surgery in 1968 — the first in Wake County.

Adult Congenital Heart Disease
Congenital heart disease is a defect of the heart that is present at birth. It can happen in the walls, arteries, valves or veins of the heart.
Atrial Fibrillation
Afib is a common heart rhythm disorder. It gets progressively worse, but it is treatable when patients seek help early.
Aneurysms
Aneurysm is a dangerous condition that happens when part of an artery wall weakens, causing it to widen in an abnormal way.
Cardiac Tumor
Cardiac tumors are abnormal growths in your heart that can be benign or malignant (cancerous).
Coronary Artery Bypass
Coronary artery bypass surgery redirects blood around a section of a blocked artery in your heart to help improve blood flow.
Valve Disease Repair and Replacement
When one or more of your heart valves doesn't open or close properly, surgery may be required.
