Diagnostics
At WakeMed, our vascular experts perform two common tests to diagnose your condition.
These include the ankle-brachial index (ABI) and the carotid duplex exam. The ABI is a non-invasive test that uses inflatable cuffs to gauge blood flow and measure blood pressure in the arteries along the thigh, calf, foot and toes. Discomfort is similar to what you might feel when having your blood pressure taken with a blood pressure cuff. The carotid duplex exam is a painless, non-invasive test that helps clinicians see and measure the rate at which blood flows through your carotid arteries, while searching for possible blockages. No radiation, dye or needles are used.
