Carotid Duplex Exam

Carotid Duplex is an ultrasound test that shows how well the blood is flowing through the carotid arteries. The carotid arteries are located in the neck. They supply blood directly to the brain. Blocked carotid arteries are a major risk factor for stroke. Other names for this test: Carotid, Carotid Doppler, Carotid Ultrasound.

During a Carotid Duplex

During the exam, you will be positioned on your back with your neck to the side. A small amount of gel will be rubbed onto your neck to help amplify the sound waves from the ultrasound. The sonographer (a specialist in ultrasound testing) will use a wand or transducer, moving it up and down your neck to get the images.

At times, the sonographer may ask you to refrain from speaking as talking during this test can interfere with the imaging and the Doppler signal. The images will be stored onto digital files. In most cases, the test is finished in less than one hour.

The images are reviewed and interpreted by a cardiologist, vascular surgeon, or specialist. The test results will be sent to your physician who will discuss them with you.
