Lung Cancer Awareness Month
November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month
When it comes to diagnosing and treating lung nodules and cancers, you and your lungs couldn’t be in better hands.
Our experts at WakeMed include pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, hematologists and medical oncologists, respiratory therapists, pulmonary therapists, tobacco cessation experts, nurse navigators and radiologists from Raleigh Radiology. All here to guide you in receiving appropriate care including diagnostic tests, best course of treatment and interventions, and support and resources no matter what stage of care you need.
Why Should You Get a Lung Cancer Screening?
The goal of low-dose CT lung cancer screening is to detect smaller nodules or cancer at an earlier stage when it’s more likely to be curable. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, and a lung cancer screening is recommended if you are ages 50-80, are a current smoker (or former smoker who quit in the past 15 years) and have a 20 pack-year smoking history (for example, one pack a day for 20 years or two packs a day for 10 years).
To learn more, talk with your primary care provider about the risks and benefits of this valuable screening tool.

Cardiopulmonary Therapy
Finding a way to cope with the symptoms of lung cancer and the side effects of lung cancer treatment is critical to improving your quality of life before, during and after treatment. If lung cancer is taking your breath away, consider cardiopulmonary therapy.
WakeMed Outpatient Rehab offers cardiopulmonary therapy to assist lung cancer patients in becoming more independent and active without getting fatigued or short of breath. Therapy is composed of exercises that seek to improve breathing techniques to reduce shortness of breath, increase airflow, strengthen muscles that are associated with breathing and improve overall lung health.
