Hip Fractures & Broken Hip

A hip fracture occurs when the upper part of the thighbone breaks. While hip fractures can occur in younger people usually as a result of a car accident or other severe trauma, the majority of hip fractures happen to people over the age of 65 due to the natural weakening of our bones as we age. For this population, a simple fall is the most common cause, and can be detrimental to their well-being.

Most hip fractures cause severe pain and require surgery immediately. Standing, bearing weight or moving the upper part of your leg or knee will be very difficult and painful.

Hip Fractures Risk Factors

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, more than 300,000 people in the United States will sustain a hip fracture. Common risk factors include:

  • Age: Hip fractures are more common in people 65+ years old, as aging tends to increase the risk of falls.
  • Gender: Women tend to be more prone to hip fractures, especially after menopause when bone mass lessens.
  • Lifestyle: Lack of regular exercise, poor intake of vitamin D and calcium rich foods, and drinking alcohol can also weaken bones and increase your risk of fracture.
  • Osteoporosis: Osteoporosis weakens bones, making them more susceptible to sudden and unexpected fractures.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Often, a patient with a hip fracture will be taken to a hospital emergency room. At the hospital, you will be examined by either an ER physician and/or an orthopaedic surgeon who will take a history of your injury and check to make sure you have not sustained any other injuries. Your provider will also check the movement, sensation and circulation in your lower leg.

Treatment for hip fracture usually involves surgery, physical therapy and medication to help manage the pain and prevent infection. Your orthorpaedic surgeon will discuss your surgery options and post-op care with you based on the severity of your injury.
