2025 WakeMed SHINE Conference Abstract Instructions
The WakeMed 2025 SHINE Conference represents more than 20 years of igniting health care providers to improve their practice and inspire excellence while focusing on the newest innovations, research and evidence-based practices in neuroscience.
Attending the SHINE Conference are more than 150 health care providers with levels of experience ranging from 1 to more than 30 years. Attendees include emergency, acute and rehab nurses, physical, occupational and speech therapists, advanced practice providers, and case managers.

Conference Presenters
- Conference Presenters are responsible for their own transportation and accommodation.
- WakeMed will provide all presenters with complementary conference registration.
Podium Presentations
- 50 minutes with 10 minutes for questions
- No more than 2 presenters per presentation
Poster Presentations
- Visual representations used to disseminate information.
- Informational, evidence-based practice, or QI projects.
- Tables will be provided, but posters must be able to stand on their own.
- Poster author(s) must be present with their poster during poster viewing times.
Abstract Selection Process
- The SHINE Conference Planning Committee members are volunteers.
- The committee will review, evaluate and score each abstract for relevant content, quality of writing and expressing key ideas.
- Notification of acceptance or regret will be e-mailed to the primary facilitator by the end of August of the selection year.

Part 2 – Financial Relationship Disclosure
- In the past 24 months, have you or your co-presenter (if applicable) had any financial relationships with ineligible companies (see definitions)?
- If yes, enter the Name of the individual, the name of the Ineligible Company, the nature of the financial relationship, and indicate if the relationship is ongoing or has now ended. For multiple relationships, please use additional lines.
Nursing Education Department at WakeMed is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.
As an approved provider of continuing education, we are responsible for following the "Standards for Integrity and Independence in Accredited Continuing Education" adopted by our accrediting body. These standards "are designed to ensure that accredited continuing education serves the needs of patients and the public, is based on valid content, and is free from commercial influence." Ineligible Financial Relationships Definitions:
Ineligible
An ineligible company is any entity whose primary business is producing, marketing, selling, re-selling, or distributing healthcare products used by or on patients.
Relationship
Examples of relationships include employee, researcher, consultant, advisor, speaker, independent contractor (including contracted research), royalties or patent beneficiary, executive role, and ownership interest). Individual stocks and stock options MUST be disclosed; diversified mutual funds do not need to be disclosed. There is no minimum financial threshold; we ask that you disclose all financial relationships, regardless of the amount, with ineligible companies.
Relevance
You should disclose all financial relationships regardless of the potential relevance of each relationship to the education.

- Limit 150 characters, including spaces
8. Description:
- Limit 175 characters, including spaces
- Short, compelling description of session
- Describes what participants should expect by attending your session
- For use in promotional materials such as convention brochures if accepted
- Addresses essential components of the presentation (reviewers should be able to evaluate the content of the presentation)
- Concise and cohesive
9. Objective:
- At least 1 objective.
- Limit 175 characters, including spaces
- Learning objectives must be congruent with the purpose, session description/summary and abstract text.
- For a list of action verbs, refer to a Bloom’s Taxonomy chart.
9. References:
- 1-2 references that you will use to build your presentation. We recommend references be within the last 7 years recommended (unless it is considered a classic work). You may add additional references as you complete your presentation. This just gives us a starting point.
- 3-5 references within the last 7 years recommended (unless it is considered a classic work)

- References must be credible (e.g., evidence-based practice/peer reviewed journals, clinical guidelines, etc.) and current unless seminal work such as: Benner, P. (1984). From novice to expert: Excellence and power in clinical nursing practice. Addison-Wesley.
- All content must be based on the latest evidence and free from product/company promotion or commercial bias.
Presenter Responsibilities
- All communication/correspondence will be directed to and from the primary presenter.
- It is the responsibility of the presenter(s) to make his/her own hotel and travel arrangements. WakeMed will provide presenters with complimentary registration for the conference.
- Travel reimbursement is not included.
- All presentations and resources must be free from commercial bias.
- All presenters must complete and submit an agreement form in which presenters agree to the following:
- Meet deadlines provided by the conference planning committee.
- Submit presentations and/or additional resources at least 4 weeks prior to the event for approval to ensure ANCC/NCNA guidelines are met.
- Refrain from copyright infringement. (Specific copyright guidelines will be provided to presenters of accepted abstracts.)
