Insurance Verification Overview 

Financial Clearance

The Financial Clearance Department at WakeMed verifies insurance, authorization requirements, and compliance with CMS guidelines for all planned procedures or admissions at all WakeMed facilities. The teams you may be familiar with are the Surgery Team — Finance and Accounting Representatives and our Preadmissions — Registered Nurses. Additionally, we provide estimates to patients at their request, call patients pre-procedure to confirm accurate demographic information, provide and attempt to collect their patient responsibility, and explain payment options including Commerce Loans for eligible patients.

WakeMed remains out of network with the following MAP plans:

• Humana (contract terminated October 31, 2023 – excludes State Health Plan for Retirees)
• Cigna (contract terminated December 31, 2024)

  • These estimates are only for services rendered at a WakeMed hospital by a WakeMed Physician and do not include services provided by non-WakeMed physicians or non-WakeMed facility charges.
  • These estimates also do not include other professional services like pathology, radiology, or anesthesiology, which are billed separately by those service providers.
