Gynecological Surgery

Millions of women undergo gynecological procedures each year, some that are considered fairly routine and minor (like dilation and curettage, known as D&C) while others, like hysterectomies (removal of the uterus) are more extensive. Fortunately, gynecological surgery is increasingly being performed using laparascopy, a minimally invasive procedure that generally results in less scarring and faster recoveries.

What is a Common Type of Gynecological Surgery?

Most procedures are follow-ups to tests or examinations that many have indicated some type of abnormality or created some uncertainty. While the need for further evaluation often causes concern, they should be viewed as a valuable diagnostic tool in your healthcare screening kit, one that allows you and your doctor to get some answers so you can decide the next steps on your path to health.

Sometimes, gynecological surgery is needed to repair tears in the cervical area that might be caused by childbirth or blunt trauma incidents.

Some common procedures include:

  • Colposcopy, which allows for a closer examination of the cervix
  • LEEP Procedure, which is used to examine abnormal cells on the surface of the cervix
  • Hysteroscopy, which helps a physician diagnose or treat a uterine problem
  • D&C, often used to diagnose or treat abnormal uterine bleeding

How Laparoscopy is Performed

The procedure is usually done in the hospital under general anesthesia, and involves a small surgical cut above or below the belly button area. The surgeon will insert a laparascope-a surgical instrument with a tiny camera and light-that allows him or her to see and work with the organs, using images sent to a computer monitor.

The advantages to laparoscopic surgery or robotics assisted surgery include smaller incisions and less scarring, less loss of blood, and a faster recovery period.
