Junior Volunteering
High School Students (Ages 16+ through the summer after graduation)
The goal of the WakeMed High School Junior Volunteer Program is to provide high school students exposure to a hospital setting and an opportunity to give back to their community.
The High School Junior Program is a volunteer opportunity and is not an internship or shadow experience.
Please Note: Applications are only accepted during certain times of the year.

WakeMed Volunteer Services offers summer and school year sessions.
We will offer limited openings for the upcoming School Year Session.

Before Applying Disclaimer

- To remain fair towards all applicants, WakeMed Volunteer Services is not preferential towards any prospective junior, due to their connection to WakeMed. WakeMed Volunteer Services also does not select juniors on a “first come, first served basis.”

- Please be aware that we do not accept applications for court ordered community service hours.

Eligibility Requirements You Must Meet
- Be age 16 or older on the date the application opens.
- Apply for only one hospital location. Students who submit more than one application will not be considered.
- Commit to months of services and hour total for program session applying for.
- Receive clearance by Occupational Health for:
- Flu vaccine — Annual requirement during flu season. Religious and medical exemptions are allowed if approved by Occupation Health.
- Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine
- Chickenpox (Varicella) vaccine
- Tdap vaccine
- Tuberculosis (TB) Screening
- Communicate well in English (second language skills are a plus).
- We do not accept applications for court ordered community service hours.
- Submission of an application does not guarantee acceptance into the Junior Program.
- Volunteer Services is only able to provide verification of volunteer hours served.
Requirements for Selected Applicants
- Receive clearance by Occupational Health for:
- Flu vaccine — Annual requirement during flu season. Religious and medical exemptions are allowed if approved by Occupation Health.
- Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine
- Chickenpox (Varicella) vaccine
- Tdap vaccine
- Tuberculosis (TB) Screening
- Attend a Virtual Information Session (required for acceptance in the program). Only selected Junior Volunteers will receive an email with a link to the virtual information session.
- Complete all onboarding requirements, including Medical, Volunteer Services and Hospital mandatories by the deadline provided in the Virtual Information Session.
- Students who have met the minimum service commitment and volunteer hours are eligible to request a continuation of their volunteer services beyond session end date.
When to Apply
Please note: Raleigh Campus and Cary Hospital Junior Volunteer applications will open on the dates listed above after 2:30 pm, if there are opportunities for junior volunteers at that location. If there are no volunteer opportunities available, the application for that location will remain closed.
Additionally, due to increased interest in the program, applicants are strongly encouraged to apply the day the application opens. Online applications will close when the number of applications received has exceeded our current needs.
