At WakeMed, we offer urodynamic testing to explore symptoms of bladder control or other urinary issues under the guidance of our patient-focused neurology experts.

The simplest form of urodynamic testing is uroflowmetry , which measures urine volume and flow rate. A more comprehensive test includes the measurement of bladder, rectal and urethral pressures; electromyography (EMG) of the sphincter muscles; and capacity volume measurements. These help doctors see how well the bladder can hold and release urine, and how well it can empty completely.

What to Expect from Urodynamic Testing 

If your physician believes your issue may be related to nerve or muscle damage in the urinary tract, he or she may recommend electromyography. Similar to standard EMG testing , we’ll use electrodes and sensors to measure electrical activity in the bladder and sphincters.

During a urodynamic EMG test, small electrode patches are placed near the urethra and rectum. The physician then asks the patient to contract and release the muscle several times to test the area. The electrode sends signals to contract the muscle and records the response, using a numerical value to show functionality.

Generally, the test takes under 30 minutes.
