Diagnostic Testing
Diagnostic testing is ordered based on the physical exam of the medical provider.
Imaging tests may be ordered and include the following:
- X-ray
- Computed tomography (CT) scan
- Nerve conduction studies (NCS)
- Electromyography (EMG)
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): MRIs are ordered after completing six physical therapy sessions. Insurance companies have strict guidelines that must be followed for MRI authorizations. Adherence to the physiatry provider’s recommendations will be helpful with this process.
These tests help providers visualize the internal structures in the back, including nerves, spinal cord, bones and soft tissues.
You may also receive contrast dye to help the spinal canal show up better in the pictures. Alert your provider if you are allergic to contrast dye.
