PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Program Internal Medicine
Note: The position for the WakeMed PGY2 Internal Medicine program is filled for the 2025-2026 residency year
The PGY2 Internal Medicine Residency at WakeMed Health & Hospitals provides residents with the experience and knowledge necessary to become competent practitioners in cardiovascular pharmacy practice.
PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.
The resident will focus on the following objectives:
- Provide exceptional patient care and unsurpassed service in a cardiology setting
- Critically evaluate published literature to create and redesign evidence-based pharmacotherapeutic regimens
- Provide drug information and identify opportunities to contribute to the body of medical literature
- Develop leadership and practice management skills within and outside of the employing institution
- Participate in clinical research, medication use evaluations and performance improvement projects focused on cardiology pharmacotherapy
- Develop collaborative relationships with members of the multi-disciplinary patient care team
- Identify opportunities to improve patient and/or provider quality and safety
- Provide experiential training and/or education to health care professionals
- Prepare the resident to accept a position within an acute care or non-tenure track faculty setting
- Present research and/or provide education at a professional conference
Requirements
- Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited College of Pharmacy
- Licensure/eligibility for licensure in North Carolina
- Completion of an ASHP-accredited or ASHP-candidate status post-graduate year one pharmacy practice residency
- Exceptional knowledge, communication skills, and leadership qualities
Qualified candidates will be invited for an on-site interview or virtual interview.

- HIV transitions
- Heart failure

- Other elective learning experiences may be developed based on resident interest and preceptor availability.
Longitudinal Rotations:
- Administration & Practice Management
- Optional teaching certificate program
- Research
- Teaching
- Service as a decentralized clinical pharmacist
- Every 3rd weekend
- 1 major and 1 minor holiday
- Approximately 7 additional service days throughout the year
Additional Required Activities:
- Complete and present a residency research project at a conference
- Formal mentorship program
- Leadership series
- Prepare a manuscript suitable for publication
- Present an ACPE-accredited continuing education program
