Starting in October of 2022, the Cardiology fellowship will offer a well encompassed experience for the APP fellow. Being a certified chest pain center, along with being one of only 212 hospitals in the nation to receive the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR Chest Pain-MI Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award, the APP fellow can be assured that they will have a well-rounded educational year learning from some of the top cardiologist and cardiology APPs nationwide.

Curriculum Overview

Our cardiology APP fellowship program is an intense, highly structured, comprehensive program designed to give you exposure to all the different areas of clinical cardiology. We will provide a large volume of patient care experiences, selected lectures, simulations and professional development sessions. Our goal is to use evidence-based medicine through a mix of didactic and clinical experiences to help you develop the specialized skills needed across the continuum of cardiovascular care.

This fellowship is designed for self-motivated, eager, and knowledgeable new advanced practice provider graduates who excelled in their previous APP training and now wish to build upon those skills to take them to the next level in cardiovascular care through our high acuity program. The fellow will learn all aspects of cardiology using many educational modalities. The variety of strategies will teach how to assess, diagnose, and treat cardiac conditions using the latest guidelines. Fellows can expect to attend lectures and online virtual learning sessions throughout this one-year program. There will be an online classroom experience with content, quizzes, and assignments.

We will provide you with the framework to become a highly successful, independent advanced practice provider. The fellows will receive strong mentorship from APP preceptors, fellow advisors, and physicians. Clinical rotations will include general cardiology, electrophysiology, cardiac catheterization lab, cardiovascular testing modalities, advanced heart failure management, and many more.

Progression

The APP fellow will be expected to show progression throughout their year by showing advancement in history and physical examination skills, management of routine arrhythmias, congestive heart failure and other invasive and non-invasive cardiology conditions. They will also be expected to show advancement in the clinical work-up and diagnosis of common cardiology conditions.

Didactic Opportunities

The APP fellow can expect a to receive a variety of didactic opportunities throughout the year. From working alongside our experienced team of cardiologist and cardiology APPs at all our WakeMed Raleigh and WakeMed Cary locations, to dedicated in-services and lectures. The APP fellow will also participate in a quality improvement project throughout the year.
