Urology
Our Urology APP fellowship team is a collaboration of exceptional board-certified physicians and APPs, bringing 30+ years of expertise, committed to delivering evidence-based urologic patient care within a diverse and complex health care environment.
Our practice provides comprehensive urologic care for adults, including advanced technologies such as laser stone and prostate surgeries, laparoscopic and robotic assisted surgery, complex pelvic reconstructive surgery and prosthetic implants. Additionally, our practice includes the medical management of complex urinary tract infections, infertility, erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence, and all urologic cancers.
A unique aspect of WakeMed Urology is the “WakeMed Kidney Stone Center,” developed in 2016, which is a unique concierge service providing access to clinicians for patients who are passing kidney stones.
The APP fellow will train alongside fourth-year urology surgical residents from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which will enhance the didactic component of the fellowship experience.
Our Urology APP fellowship program is an intense, highly structured, comprehensive program designed to give you exposure to all the different areas of clinical urology. We will provide a large volume of patient care experiences, selected lectures, simulations and professional development sessions. Our goal is to use evidence-based medicine through a mix of didactic and clinical experiences to help you develop the specialized skills needed across the continuum of urological care.
This fellowship is designed for self-motivated, eager, and knowledgeable new advanced practice provider graduates who excelled in their previous APP training and now wish to build upon those skills to take them to the next level in urological care through our high acuity program. The fellow will learn all aspects of urology using many educational modalities. The variety of strategies will teach how to assess, diagnose, and treat urological conditions using the latest guidelines. Fellows can expect to attend lectures and learning sessions throughout this one-year program.
We will provide you with the framework to become a highly successful, independent advanced practice provider. The fellows will receive strong mentorship from APP preceptors, fellow advisors, and physicians.
Urology APP Fellowship Curriculum Overview
Our 12-month training program is divided into two blocks: Foundation and Immersion. During the Foundation Block, the APP fellow will build their knowledge and skills of common inpatient and outpatient urological diseases, under the close guidance of the urological team. During the Immersion Block, the APP fellow will develop autonomy in the inpatient, ambulatory and surgical setting. The electives will be selected during the Foundation Block after exposure to various areas of urology. Weekly educational conferences will include didactic conference, morbidity and mortality conference, journal club, tumor board, and monthly professional development days.
Procedural Skills
The APP fellow will become well versed in a diverse set of bedside procedural skills with opportunities for da Vinci® Surgical System robotic first assist training.
Completion
Prior to completion, the program will require the Fellow to complete a quality improvement project, mentored by the co-directors of residency and fellowship. At the completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be able to demonstrate excellence in management of urologic patients in the ambulatory, surgical, and inpatient settings. The fellow will also be expected to participate in and present a QI project during their fellowship year.
