About STIs and STDs
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) happen when bacteria or viruses, acquired through sexual contact, enter the body and begin multiplying. Once the sexually transmitted bacteria or viruses have gained access to the body, the infection may progress into a disease. Disease occurs when these germs officially obstruct the body’s normal processes. There are numerous STDs. The most common and well known include chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). STDs caused by bacteria can be treated and cured. Viruses, such as genital herpes, on the other hand, can be treated but cannot be cured.
